Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio) was appointed to the Senate Appropriations Committee, according to a Mar. 27 announcement by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Chair of the committee, following the confirmation of Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
The appointment places Husted on a key committee responsible for drafting legislation that allocates federal funds across government agencies each fiscal year, which impacts how tax dollars are spent and which projects receive funding.
“My overarching goal as a United States Senator for Ohio is to provide excellent service and put Ohioans first, and joining the Senate Appropriations Committee allows me to further deliver on this mission. My assignment on Appropriations will allow me to be a stronger voice in fighting for the needs of our state while finding savings to protect hard-earned tax dollars. I’m honored Chair Collins selected me to serve, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to secure Ohio priorities while helping right our financial ship,” said Husted.
Collins said, “Senator Husted will be an excellent addition to the Appropriations Committee. I am confident he will be a strong partner in our work to ensure that federal spending delivers real, fiscally responsible results for both the American people and the people of Ohio.”
Husted will serve on several subcommittees: Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies; Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies; State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs; Interior, Environment and Related Agencies; Legislative Branch; Financial Services and General Government.
The Senate Appropriations Committee is currently composed of 29 members in its 119th Congress session with twelve subcommittees handling specific areas within federal spending responsibilities defined by law.
According to his official website, Husted has previously served as Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives where he advanced tax reductions and educational choice scholarships before holding roles as Ohio secretary of state and lieutenant governor prior to joining the U.S. Senate. He also serves on committees focused on health, education, labor and pensions; small business and entrepreneurship; environment and public works; as well as aging.
Husted earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Dayton where he was an All-American defensive back who helped lead his team—the Flyers—to a Division III football national championship according to his official biography. He ran for office emphasizing tax reductions alongside educational choice scholarships while defending voter roll integrity in a landmark Supreme Court decision. His family includes his wife Tina with whom he raised three children in Columbus.
Looking ahead at his new role within appropriations oversight processes—such as reviewing presidential budget requests or marking up bills—Husted emphasized bipartisan cooperation aimed at securing priorities for Ohio.
