Join us for a virtual conversation between 2018 CIA alum Davon Brantley and CIA faculty member Lane Cooper from noon to 1pm Friday, October 9. Creativity Hour is a new series of Cleveland Institute of Art alumni conversations that will explore each graduate’s artistic practice, inspirations and professional experiences. The talks are organized by the Alumni Council and will also cover the speaker’s time as a CIA student and include their advice for young and aspiring artists.

Davon Brantley implements self-portraiture and psychology within his work, which is inspired by the dissociative behaviors that happen as a result of traumatic experiences and the repetition involved with traumatic experiences. Brantley’s interest in psychology and how traumatic experiences not only affect you in your childhood but also within adulthood comes from the fact that he experienced traumatic experiences growing up that have affected his development. This has caused Brantley’s work to revolve around how these experiences through life can change your relationships with family, friends, loves and meditations on sexuality, masculinity, race, etc. Brantley leads the audience through his mind, which can take the form of theater, utilizing dramatic compositions and characters that act out certain emotions and themes in which he plays all of the roles of these characters. Brantley’s work is all about the experience of an African American male acknowledging the trials of the living world and the effects it has on the mind.
Based in Cleveland, Lane Cooper is an artist, curator and writer. She is an Associate Professor of Painting at Cleveland Institute of Art, where she also teaches in Liberal Arts. She has exhibited widely, and this past March, her work appeared in River House Arts’ curatorial project “Cake” at the Spring/Break Art Show, NYC. She has written essays and reviews for a variety of platforms, including Sculpture Magazine. Her curatorial projects have appeared regionally in venues such as the Cleveland State University Galleries, The Sculpture Center and Waterloo Arts.
