Cleveland Institute of Art recently issued the following announcement.
My Kid Could Do That examines how the boundaries between visible and descriptive realities come close together. By dealing with the formal and fundamental aspects such as
figure-ground relationship, physical properties of paint or texture, the paintings stand as a reminder that first of all they are paintings. Thus, taking its materiality into our physical
environment, it operates as a propositional sign that says art is about the real-time and immediate central perception that lead to ideas behind the work and what those ideas might
be. The moment of experiencing a configuration such as painting becomes a moment of the intellectual experience of that configuration. Consequently, it becomes an idea/art itself
—how we experience painting, construct images and meaning out of them in our heads.
In relation to this moment, as we live in unprecedented times, the exhibition highlights the artist’s optimistic worldview along with humor as relief and release. It reminds how
wonderful it is to smile even if there is chaos outside.
My Kid Could Do That will be on view March 7–16 in the Ann and Norman Roulet Student + Alumni Gallery. A closing reception will take place from 5 to 8pm Wednesday, March 16.
