The Notre Dame College women's soccer team hosted Wheeling University on Wednesday afternoon at Mueller Field. A pair of first half goals by the Falcons were overcome by a resilient Cardinal team, as WU grabbed the victory 3-2.
Notre Dame College came out of the gate firing with a shot on goal by freshman Emma Buda in third minute. During the fifth minute, junior Kalie Blaising unleashed a rocket from 30-yards out, finding the top shelf of the goal and moving NDC ahead, 1-0.
Over the next 15 minutes, the Falcons continued their relentless pursuit on offense with four more shots, including junior Emma Parker's first career goal in the 23rd minute (2-0). Parker received a brilliant feed from senior Madison Luckett and junior Anaya Edwards who were both credited with an assist on the play. For Edwards, it is the first assist of her career.
During the very next minute, Wheeling found the back of the net after a cross from Medina Doka found Kenadee Burgoyne in the box (2-1). NDC would register a pair of shots on goal during the remainder of the half, but enter the break holding a 2-1 advantage.
In the second half, Wheeling flipped the script and came out firing. In the 47th minute, Burgoyne stepped up again for the Cardinals with her second goal of the match, equalizing the contest at 2-2.
Despite three more shots on goal over the next 20 minutes, NDC was unable to break the stalemate. In the 69th minute, Wheeling scored the game-winning goal off the foot of Talynn DeBartolo (3-2). The Falcons tallied three corner kicks during the remainder of the game, but were unable to generate a shot.
Blaising led the Notre Dame offense on the day with her first goal of the season, after taking a team-high four shots (all on goal). Edwards posted two shots as four other Falcons recorded one each.
In goal, senior goalkeeper Jordan Pasalaqua logged five saves in the contest.
In comparing the two sides, Wheeling outshot Notre Dame 16 to 11, although NDC added to their top five NCAA DII mark for shot accuracy with 10 of their 11 shots requiring goal tending. Lastly, the Cardinals posted eight saves to the Falcons five, while NDC tallied four corner kicks to WU's one.
The Notre Dame College women's soccer team will be back in action when they return to Mueller Field on Sunday Sept. 18 at 5 p.m. to host Frostburg State University.
