WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. WadeCongresswoman Shontel Brown (OH-11) joined colleagues from the House Democratic Caucus in calling for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to bring legislation restoring reproductive rights to the House floor for a vote.
Congresswoman Brown and House Democrats have signed a discharge petition to bring the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) to the floor. If a majority of the House of Representatives signs the petition, the WHPA will be voted on over the objections of Republican leadership.
Congresswoman Brown is a cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act and a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus. The WHPA would enshrine the principles of Roe v. Wade into law and statutory right for health care providers to provide abortion care and for their patients to receive that care.
Congresswoman Brown released the following statement:
“The Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health was disastrous for my constituents in Northeast Ohio, denying women the ability to make fundamental decisions about their lives. Because of this radical ruling, women now have fewer rights than their grandmothers enjoyed. As a Black woman, I know what’s possible when federal civil rights are not enshrined and enforced. What’s happening in post-Roe America is tragically reminiscent of Jim Crow, with state lines determining individual rights, now with people often needing to flee certain states to receive reproductive and gender-affirming care. That is why we must pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, to enshrine reproductive rights into federal law. I am proud to cosponsor this legislation and join my colleagues in pushing for Speaker McCarthy to bring it to the floor for a vote. If House Republicans want to ban abortion and reproductive freedom, let them have the courage to do so while the entire country watches.”
