CLEVELAND, OH – On June 29, Congresswoman Shontel Brown (OH-11) released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action in admissions processes at higher education institutions:
“The Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action is a disaster for the Black and Brown young people I represent in Northeast Ohio and a disaster for underserved communities across the country. This is a terrible outcome for America, because diverse schools are better schools for all students.
“We must recognize what this ruling will likely mean: drastically reduced numbers of Black and Brown students being admitted to the nation’s most selective schools. I think of so many brilliant minds, so many brilliant youth here in Northeast Ohio, who are going to be denied opportunities because of this shameful decision. I won’t stop fighting for them.
“This isn’t simply about education either, as graduates from those institutions dominate our public offices, legal and medical fields, major corporations, and more. As Justice Jackson wrote in her dissent, this is about who has access to the American Dream.
“Today’s ruling is a major setback, but we can’t stop working for justice and equal opportunities. I am more committed than ever to building an America where all people can thrive.”
